愛する家族と友達こんにちは!!
ahhahahah this week has been the most mentally draining week of my whole life. My new companion is Kogure shimai, from an area in the tokyo mission boundaries. SHE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahhahaha I love her so much. I don't quite understand everything she says, but she's hilarious and we have gotten really good at charades and using dictionaries and her beautiful electronic dictionary. She doesn't speak very much english at all, but does know some vocabulary words which is a tender mercy. And my japanese has gotten significantly better since last thursday at transfers. woooo! also she is AN AWESOME MISSIONARY!!!! she's constantly looking for ways to serve people and she's so friendly and speaks japanese and is a super clear and powerful teacher and she's basically perfect and even pretended to like the rice that I somehow messed up. hahahah and we have the same laugh which makes me laugh more. she loves inaka and loves to work hard and this transfer is going to be AMAZING!!! also it's her birthday today and we just went to sushi roll (my 2nd time this week... i recently discovered it) and also to a delicious cake shop and also to mcdonalds and bought SAKURA JUICE FLOATS. it's the best birthday I've ever spent with someone. and I feel soooooo full. sushi roll is this amazing restaurant where a conveyor belt constantly displays different plates of sushi in front of you and you just take as many as you want and each plate is about a dollar and has 2 adorable little sushis on it and you're happy for the rest of your life. today I discovered the delicousness of eel. who would've thought?
hahahah on the flip side my headaches are picking up but they aren't nearly as bad as the ones I had at the MTC or a few times at home. Tender mercy!!!! but they've moved a little bit and now I mostly feel them behind my eyes? they're okay though, really, and if they get any worse, which they probably won't, I have loads of powerful american medicine in the depths of my suitcase and we have the power of God on our side so there's really no concern at all. just a casual update.
also satake san is confirmed and an official member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints!!! It's the coolest thing of my life to see someone's life change so drastically and to see their entire complexion change. She's doing really well. we're going to go visit her tomorrow and I just love her to pieces and she's the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life and when Pipers shimai had to leave she gave her 11 dollars and refused to take it back since it was the 'feelings of a grandmother'. So we gave them to her nephew to give back to her or use for tithing or fast offerings. hahha. she's sooo cute.
Kogure shimai and i taught mao chan about eternal life this week and I don't have any more time but i think I wrote about it in my journal but summary-- she's the most pure and ready-for-the-blessings-of-the-gospel person I've ever seen. we started out by saying we were going to talk about eternal life and she said, ''ahhhh I want eternal life!!'' hahah but we taught her why she wants it because she didn't actually know what it was and she currently wants it so bad and at the end prayed so that she would be able to be baptized because her mom is hantai but we're going to visit with delicious american cookies hopefully tomorrow and melt her heart with love. the lesson was super awesome. I LOVE HERRRRR. otherwise Toyooka is full of searching for more people like her and satake san whom we have yet to find. but we're being faithful and we'll find them. Woo!!!
i love you all!!! have a wonderful week!!!
love,

Konnichiwa!!!!!
hahah I really have no idea what I eat-- when I ask people what it is I don't usually understand because my food vocabulary isn't super polished and also you can't tell because things are typically goopy and sticky globs ahahhahaha. but sometimes they're delicious. haha i've come to love mochi and anko-- totemo oishii. haha satake shimai feeds us lots of anko. speaking of which.......
SATAKE SAN RECEIVED BAPTSISM YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh It was seriously one of my favorite moments of my whole life.
actually I'm going to start from the beginning of sunday morning. we biked to the church and found the baptism "font" all set up. It's actually a super large pool that took up the entire kitchen because toyooka doesn't have its own font. IT'S SO COOL. I'll be sure to include a picture. hahahahha and we filled it up with water from the sink using a sweet little half-pipe thing. I'm really struggling with my vocabulary. it reminded me so much of that little game mouse trap. it took like 3 hours to fill it up and to keep it warm we turned the aircon (heater kinda thing because they don't have central heating in the buildings). hahah anyway. it was legit.
my favorite family in the whole country of japan is moving to nishiwaki and yesterday was their last day. sacrament included each of them (3 kids and the ryoushin) giving their testimonies. and the 13 year old boy recited all 13 of the articles of faith without looking and it was the most impressive thing of my whole life and blew any child ever out of the water. and then I secretly cried through Haruka chan's testimony (15) and sister and president murata's testimonies. I love them so much-- they are some of the most Christ-like people I've ever met in my whole life. and they're hilarious and speak english. haha.
okay BAPTISM KAI. so I was conducting the music and sat behind the pulpit when tada kaicho (satake shimai's nephew) introduced her and ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I can't explain the love I felt/still feel for this family. it was AWESOME. He had his arm around her and spoke for like 30 minutes but they were so cute and I've never seen her smile for so long. hahah it was adorable when she put on her jumpsuit and this tiny little 88 year old was hiding and complaining that she thought she looked awkward and she didn't want to go back into the reihaido (chapel) because she thought the clothes were weird. The pant legs wre rolled up like a million times because she's so cute and tiny. hahah but she eventually warmed up when she saw that the elder's investigator who also was getting baptized was also wearing a bright white jumpsuit and they entered together. I LOVE HER.
So after we had the talks and the elders, pipers shimai and i sang "when i am baptized" for everyone (which was so yabbai. I'll send the japanese lyrics sometime) and then we entered the kitchen where the font was set up. haha the pool was as tall as she was so we put a chair on the outside and inside of the pool wall so that she could step in. but it was still the most terrifying thing of my life because this 88- almost 89- year-old woman was jumping up on a chair and scaling a pool wall but she had tons of help and is healthier than 1/3 of America. so that worked out well. and once she got in the water it hit about mid-thigh maybe? so naturally pipers shimai and i are freaking out that since the water is so low and she's older that she'd have a hard time with the actual ordinance. hahah I was praying so hard. and I thought-- hey, this whole conversion process has been the biggest miracle to ever enter my life and if the Lord can change the heart of an 88 year old woman (and everything else He has already done ever) then giving her excellent flexibility and body strength is a cinch. and it was. She flew back (I definitely thought she was going to hit her head) but Kaicho pulled her out, all of her made it under, and she finished with a "sore dake?"- Is that all? what a woman.
She was SO HAPPY. Her smile was so bright. Kaicho was also insanely happy and my heart was bursting because this family is going to return to live with God again and they'll be able to live together FOREVER. and there's a temple trip next month!!!! we're going to get her to go, even if she just sits inside. I talked to her afterwards, and I still don't understand most of what she says but when I asked how she felt she got really intense and did lots of hand motions and smiled a lot and I caught a couple words like ureshii and ippai and kansha-- happy, filled, gratitude-- and my life is so blessed and I love being a missionary more than anything in the world. she asked at least 3 times if we could still come to her house and she said she'd still buy us mikans. SATAKE SHIMAI WE DON'T COME TO EAT YOUR MIKANS WE COME BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU. but she still buys them anyway. and they are delicious every time. except when they're a little rotten. which only happens occasionally. This gospel is true.
Also, I'm getting a new companion!!! Dad, no worries, it's a nihonjin. hahha i think her name is kogure shimai? I'm kinda terrified to have a japanese companion. slash i'm now a 4th transfer???????? when did that happen? okay really I'm a 4th transfer next week. my new companion came to japan with pipers shimai so I've actually seen a picture of her on my mission president's blog when I stalked it before I came but I have no idea who she is. I'll meet her in Kobe on thursday!! Pipers shimai is being shipped to Osaka!!!!! wooooo!!!!!!!!! hahah I guessed that! that's the first time my yogen (prophecy) has ever been correct. hutchings choro is staying for a 5th transfer in toyooka (but he's the 2nd counselor in the presidency of the branch so he'll probably stay here for the rest of his mission) and hoshino choro is going back in the trenches and training a new missionary somewhere and now they'll need a new gospel principles teacher and elders's q. president. we're kinda low on priesthood holders.
anyway, i love you all and if I had more time I'd write about the rest of the week which was also wonderful. my headaches aren't bad and the weather is warmer! I'm nervous about my new companion because I don't speak this language yet but my goal is to become fluent this next transfer! wooo!! hahah. but if that were to happen i'd be super okay with it.
I love you!!!! I'm praying for you all! hahah tell employees at pump house that I say hi. and everyone! I hope michigan is starting to get warmer. gomen about the predicted cold summer. I hear toyooka is awful in the summer so maybe I'll send some of the heat to you! even things out.
<3,
Daniels shimai
愛する人、こんにちは!
thank you so much for all of the emails and letters and love!!!! (: and thank you thank you for the pictures!!!! i loved them! I especially love the one of the kids with the signs. ELIZA LOOKS SO GROWN UP. and I'm proud to see you all representing Ohio State. I think this might be a good thing, but I completely forgot about March Madness... but thank you for whoever picked a 1 seed and 2 seed for me!!!! wooo!! ahhahaha that's the best drawing I've ever gotten. Sorry bryan that you got a 3 and 4. maybe it's an underdog year?
This week was amazing and beautiful and I can't exactly remember all the reasons why, but I wrote them down in my journal so it's okay. hahahah yesterday was the first time I've ever felt the actual effects of the birthday because my knees were achy. I guess I am two generations old now. but it's nothing to be concerned over-- just the consequences of biking across rice fields for a couple hours each day and sitting hiza (kneeling). hahah but I don't have grey hair yet-- side note: SO MANY KIDS HERE HAVE GREY HAIR. I think it's because they have 6 day weeks of school and a 1 week "summer" break. and no slurpies.
As it turns out, we changed satake san's baptism to next sunday, the 23rd. she was totally ready to be baptized yesterday, but her nephew, the branch president, was on call this past weekend and wanted to be able to be at her baptism/perform her baptism, understandably. ahhaha when we texted him and told him we needed a baptismal record he dropped it off and gave us loads of snacks and delicious juice/soda. I think we were all kinda in awe of what the situation was. but we changed plans so he could be there and I've never felt better about anything in my life. Also!!!! this past week she had lost a very special stamp and remembered that she could pray, so she did!! And right after she prayed she found it!! YESSSSSSSSSS! and she said that because of that experience she knows that God really does exist. YES, SATAKE SAN, YES HE DOES. I feel like a proud parent. Our little Satake san is applying what we've taught her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last time we met with her she told us she'd believe anything we told her. I wish I could accurately express to you how much I love this woman but I really just don't know how. All I know is that my heart feels more joy than from anything before. like equal to spending time with you all, but still so different. It's the same feeling I felt when Mitch came home from Guatemala and we were all together again. I think it's safe to call it eternal joy-- a taste of what eternal life will feel like. PMG describes it that way so I think I'm accurate on my doctrine.
oh!! so yesterday in church pipers shimai, hutchings choro, hoshino choro and i sang as a quartet. we sang "Love is spoken here" from the children's songbook-- the first two verses in english and the last verse combined in japanese. IT WAS SO AWESOME and the spirit was so strong and there were so many people at church packed in that little branch. and I just love those people with all my heart. We had one of our PI's, Manami chan, come and her heart was so softened and it was just an awesome sacrament meeting and she was blazing through the gospel doctrines book (which was kinda scary becasue it is so in depth and sometimes confuses people wayy too much wayy too quickly and they give up) but she survived, and she was digging young womens. we had a shoukujikai after church because the murata's are moving to Nishiwaki and Maria shimai is moving to Provo to go to UVU. Which means 6 of my favorite people are leaving me and my heart is going to break but they promised they'll be back for Shoya kun's baptism so it's okay, as long as they keep me in Toyooka. I love this place. The work is moving forward here, it's so insane.
there are like 50000000 more things I want to tell you but I really just don't have the time. thank you so much again for all of the emails and everything!!! jess, make me proud in tennis. tell matt I say hi <3 LIZ I love your bracelet and hello kitty!!!! I show it off to everyone. Spencer,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY IN A COUPLE OF DAYS!!!!! I sent you a letter in the mail today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry it won't get there in time ): but it's on its way! I'll email you back in 6 months. (;
everyone else I love you!

konnichiwa!
I bet it was awesome seeing Brother Clark!
Ahhhhhhh this week has been so crazy and full of miracles but I have like 15 minutes so I'm going to be super fast. Also, I just hit a button and I'm not sure how to get out of italics so I'm sorry if this bothers anyone. hahahahh and before I begin: Mom, you were right. I should've practiced the piano. I should've learned all the songs (or any of them) from the hymn book before I got my license. Your yogen became true; I was called on a mission to a really small branch and all the young women who can play the piano were at their graduation rehearsal so I had to play the piano during sacrament meeting and it was pretty bumpy and I regretted not practicing when I had piano lessons. Kids: practice the piano.
So! yay!!! normal text! so on saturday we had a lesson with Mao chan (15) and her best friend dosekied (Misa chan) and it was SO LEGIT. misa chan is a convert of 2ish years and I love her with all my heart and she's amazing and Mao chan is the best and plays the tenor sax?? and loves jazz?? - that's not a thing in Japan. hahah so I whipped out my pictures and we bonded and she's so cute and last week when she came to church she prayed in sunday school so to start the lesson I asked her if she'd pray for us. and she was way cute and Misa chan helped her at the end but it was just precious. Baaaaah so we started off telling her that God is her loving Heavenly Father and she thought that was the coolest thing and she told us that last week before one of her tests she prayed to God and asked Him to help her and she felt a peace. and right after that I testified that He loves her. and I paused. and said "Mao chan, you are a daughter of God". The spirit was so tangible and it was INCREDIBLE because I SAW it enter her heart. I don't know how to explain it, but you could see her feel the Spirit and her whole complexion changed. She even utter a "whoa." The power of the Spirit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Pipers shimai and I talked about why we came to Japan and she was eating it all up and it was sooo amazing and I could feel the Spirit guiding me and directing me what to say. and somehow we got on the topic of being members of the church and I showed her my baptism pictures Pipers shimai invited her to be baptized in April and she was like "I want to join!!!" and she's GOLD. she doesn't even know about eternal life yet!!! hahah but seriously. I'm honestly not doing any of this work it is 1000000% the spirit. She said she already talked to her mom about becoming Christian and her mom told her she couldn't because they're buddhist so we'll have to try and solve some hantai problems but AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I LOVE MAO CHAN AND I LOVE BEING A MISSIONARY!!!
also, satake san is feeling a lot of pressure to be baptized from the members and she's feeling really incapable becasue she's 88 so we visited her with the zone leaders because we only understand really like 20% maybe of what she says and hoshino choro is nihonjin so he was going to help us figure out if she has any doctrinal confusion. also we were nervous cause we needed to teach her the word of wisdom and we knew she drank tea. slash everyone in toyooka smokes, drinks osake (alcohol) and drinks tea like they breathe air so we were way nervous. hahaha but when we went we found out she thinks that baptism is like buddhist monk training?? like apparently they sit under a waterfall or something and it's a huge process so that is good to know. we're going to show her some videos... . also miracle-- the tea she drinks is okay!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahah i still don't understand that exactly, but there's a list of teas that you can technically drink (i think the ones that don't have grass? zen zen wakaranai) and obviously the ones that the word of wisdom outlines we need to avoid. and she doesn't violate anything else and it's just not even funny how well prepared she is.
the work is moving forward at an accelerated pace as we rely on the Lord. Everything works out. But it honestly requires all of your heart, might, mind and strength. I've never been so exhausted in my whole life and I'm way surprised we haven't slept through our alarm or haven't gotten sick. okay, not really because we're on the Lord's time haha. And our ringtone is Elder Holland IT'S THE BEST. He's watching over us and He's with us. I feel His presence around us, and I feel His guidance as we do our best to help His sheep. It's amazing what He can do. We don't understand satake san, she doesn't understand us. yet somehow we're preparing her to be baptized and teaching her. It'S amazing how He guides us to meet her needs through the books we've made for her. Most of all she feels God's love. that's really all you need, desho?
I love you all!!!
also i got the birthday cards in the mail!!!!!!!! (: haha thank you so much. I definitely opened them already hahahha. i love them!!!! thank you lizzy for the AWESOME HELLO KITTY RUBBER BAND DOLL AND FOR THE BRACELETS!!! i think it really made pipers shimai happy that you made her a panda and bracelets. and we're way impressed with you. but seriously, how did you make them?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!?
love,
sister megan daniels

YAYAYAYAYAYAYYAY STERLING, CONGRATS ON YOUR MISSION CALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MADRID, SPAIN!!!!! What, that's awesome!!!!!!!! (Mom please forward this to Sterling or Aunt Margo so she can forward the following information.) One of the most amazing spiritual giants I know is serving in that mission!!! Look for a Hermana Chrisy Grover! She's maybe a little shorter than I am and has really long, awesome brown hair. she was one of my friends at BYU! AHHHHH SPAIN!!!!! take loads of pictures for me (: THAT IS SO AWESOME!!! I'm sure you've already become fluent in spanish from high school and since opening your call, but if you haven't already, use those 5 months to learn the language! Mitch can help you (:
WHAT LEXIE IS ENGAGED???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I can't even remember what else your email said. HOLY COW WHAT I'M HONESTLY HAVING A SMALL HEART ATTACK. She's the 3rd of my friends to get engaged in 4 months. SEND ME PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I sent her an email (through tyler cause I thought I already had hers but I left it at my apartment) BUT I'M STILL FREAKING OUT. tell her to wait until march (: but actually. WHAT SHE'S GETTING MARRIED. SHE'S MY LITTLE SISTER. I think she owes Kirsten a chocolate when we made bets in young womens. and me! wooo! and caitlin!! hahah #missionaries
Okay so this week was actually so incredible. Satake san (our 88 year old) IS GETTING BAPTIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she set the date-- March 16th. That is going to be the best birthday of my ENTIRE EXISTENCE. This woman!!!!! and she'll be spiritually reborn!!! that's going to be the best day ever!!!!!! So on saturday we had a joint lesson with the branch president and another member (also an older lady I can't understand very well) and it was pretty crowded. haha but kaicho insisted that we bring her so that they could pick us up in the car.
either way, we were following up and eating mikans and talking about baptism and then her friend, also named satake san, comes in and joins us. YES. so after building some relationship and listening to the 3 older women talk about their poor hearing and their knee pains and wishing them well, I whip out my simple 30 second statements on Jesus Christ that I've been polishing as I've been focusing on the life of the Savior and I shared them. BAM THE SPIRIT WAS SO STRONG. And Pipers shimai shared her heartfelt on Christ and we talked about how only through Jesus Christ we can have live in a state of never-ending happiness with God and our families again after we die and it was so awesome and then Kaicho offered to give both of our Satake sans priesthood blessings to help them recover from their ailments and after our Satake san's blessing the other Satake san had tears streaming down her face and after some nudging from our Satake san she also received a priesthood blessing. AND SHE WAS SO GRATEFUL AND WE INVITED HER TO CHURCH but she didn't end up coming, but we'Re going to visit her this week!!!! wooooooooo!!
it was a great lesson.
also, on Friday we had Elder Whiting of the quorum of the 70 visit Kobe and we had a mission conference and he was amazing and powerful and the spirit was so strong and I'm so pumped for General Conference next month and he's so inspired. Also, kaicho gave me the opportunity, along with 9 other missionaries, to have interviews with him which was way awesome! The interview was pretty simple, but even for that short period of time I felt the spirit so strongly. He loves sister missionaries. Also when we closed he prayed for me and literally asked for every blessing to be bestowed upon me. I can't even describe to you how that feels. At the very end he asked me for advice to the MTC missionaries as he will be speaking to them soon and after I answered he high-fived me. It was the best high five I have ever received in my whole life.
i have to go but this week I had gross stuff and natto which is also gross. hahha
i love you all!!!
you're always in my prayers <3
meg
this week the sun came out for like 3 days!!!!!!!!! hahhah it was actually so uplifting. when the sun comes out, toyooka is the most beautiful place on the face of the earth.
I can't even remember what happened this week; it goes by so soso fast. S. san is a champion and I also decided that she looks a lot like Yoda. hahahh which is not an insult because he's a jedi master. but she's still the most energetic woman i've ever seen besides her 87 year old neighbor who visits her every day and is also widowed. hahah Pipers shimai and I dropped by this past week when they were together and they were the cutest things I have ever seen. Also her friend was obsessed with Pipers shimai and I and asked if we used magic lotion to make our skin white. hahah I like her. and it also made my life because Satake san showed her her Morumon Sho and all of her books from relief society gospel doctrines class. She's a good missionary. hahah also she showed her all of the books we'd made for her. They think our art is like super impressive, but I know for a fact that any average 7 year old could do a better job hahha. but her friend said that we must have pure hearts because only people with clean hearts can draw ''such beautiful pictures''. maybe she'd come to the same conclusion. (;
Around each month our mission president gives us a training plan to study and apply to our missionary work. they are the BEST things ever and always always so inspired. At district meeting last friday he, through the district leaders, distributed a brand new one that is only in effect for 2 weeks and is centered purely on coming to know who Jesus Christ is. IT IS SO POWERFUL I LOVE IT SO MUCH. honestly, there are going to be incredible, innumerable miracles in these next two weeks. I feel like our area is going to pick up. I don't know how but I feel it. I have no clue, but our Lord, Jesus Christ does. And we study and learn about Jesus Christ everyday as missionaries anyway, but it's just another added focus. It's purely learning more of Him and strengthening our personal relationships with Him in our individual lives and in our dendo. One of the goals is to be able to bear powerful and simple testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Ah man I love it. Also, next Friday a member of the 70, Elder Whiting, is visiting the mission and we get to travel to see him!!!!!! I'm so excited (: This week is going to be AWESOME。but in reality, every week is awesome. When your life is centered on the Redeemer of the world you really can't ask for anything else. A mission kinda chips away your heart but it molds it and sands it and makes it just a little bit better than it was
I'M SO EXCITED TO HEAR WHERE STERLING GETS CALLED TO!!!!!!!!!!!! tell him I'm proud of him and that his mission is going to be so hard but so incredible and he's going to LOVE it!!! i'm so excited for him!!!!!!
have a good week!

konnichiwa!
this week was great!!! I experienced my first mini typhoon which was exciting. I'm super impressed that japanese houses stay intact because the winds are sooooooooo strong and the houses are sooooo fragile and tiny with no insulation. but it was super cool. hahha biking was impossible though. but the day after was sooooo beautiful and the sun came out and there was a chocolate making party for the relief society and young women (which is like 7 people). but i LOVE these members. they are honestly some of the strongest people I have ever met in my life. their faith is soooooooooooooo rock solid. all of the members have a stake calling and a branch calling and work and raise families and like 7000 other things. we worked with the branch members a lot this week and they have so much dendo fire!!!! I have soooo much respect for them.
I have to go but I'll send you some cool pictures of japanese things
i love you alllllllll! sorry this is so short!!!
love,
daniels shimai
1. oragami konotori -- a bird famous in toyooka. apparently they sound like dinosaurs but I haven't heard them yet. but we saw some this week!!!!!
2. some awesome socks i bought-- the toe socks are SOOOO JAPANESE. socks here are the best
thank you for the email (: ahah I wish that people would choose the right and listen to us!!!! It's okay. this week was better; the weather wasn't as cold and we had a day that wasn't rainy/snowy! that was wonderful. My companion has been out for a year this month. she's trying hard she just gets tired really easily and gets pretty discouraged but during doryo (companionship study) we talked about not getting discouraged and showing the Lord our faithfulness. Our goal this week is to not complain about the weather or lack of investigators or Toyooka or anything. So we'll see how it goes. hahah i'll respond to the rest of your email on my big email (;
I love you! thank you! and thank you for your prayers. If you see Mrs. DeVries again tell her I love her and her family!
love,
meg (:
